The Lake Powell Pipeline is a proposed project that would pump 88,000 acre-feet of water annually from the Colorado River at Lake Powell across 140 miles of desert to Washington and Kane counties southwest Utah. Washington and Kane counties claim they need the water to sustain future growth, although all available data shows the water isn’t needed. These counties boast some of the highest water use rates in the west. The project would cost Utah taxpayers over $2 billion dollars, and further deplete a dwindling Colorado River. The pipeline would be the largest new diversion of Colorado River water, flying in the face of efforts across the Basin to use less water.
This pipeline would spell disaster for the Colorado River, which is already experiencing a long-term decline from climate change and continued demand for water. The project would further encourage wasteful use and dependence on this fickle resource, forcing taxpayers to foot the bill.
