SUBJECT: Please Stand Up for National Park Staff and National Monuments

MESSAGE:

I am writing to urge you to stand up for the National Park Service (NPS) staff that were wrongly terminated last month and restore their critically important jobs. NPS employees play a vital role in the protection of cultural, ecological, and recreational resources at our parks, not to mention emergency services, wastewater treatment, and trash collection. They are the backbone of our parks and are necessary to provide a safe experience for the millions of visitors who come to these spectacular landscapes every year.

National Parks are a massive economic boon to gateway communities, supporting 415,000 jobs contributing $55 billion to the national economy in 2023 alone. Park employees are committed stewards to our country’s most cherished landscapes, helping protect and preserve the parks for the public and future generations. Cutting over a thousand Park Service staff has already created chaos and confusion and is jeopardizing local economies right as increased spring visitation is about to begin.

Secondly, in response to two current threats to our national monuments, I implore you to preserve these lands of critical cultural and ecological significance. Recent legislation introduced by Congresswoman Celeste Malloy and Senator Mike Lee (H.R.521/S.220) would repeal executive authority to designate national monuments through the 1906 Antiquities Act, a bedrock tool of conservation. Simultaneously, Secretary of Interior Doug Burgum has ordered a revision of National Monuments with the goal of opening up public land to drilling and mining. Yet recent polling from the Colorado College found that 88 percent of Western voters are in favor of keeping national monument designations in place. Please do everything in your power to counter and advocate against these short-sighted moves to undermine our monuments.

As your constituent, I urge you to speak out against these reckless attacks against our parks, monuments, and the environmental rules that protect our cherished natural resources for future generations of all Americans.
