Monthly Newsletter of the Glen Canyon Institute
  October 8, 2004
Volume 3 No. 10

Aloha Glen Canyon supporters,

There are great things going on all over the place for the movement to restore Glen Canyon this fall. We are happy to announce the arrival of a brand new website for Glen Canyon Institute. While still at the same address: http://www.glencanyon.org , the new site is chock full of information in our new research library, recent photos of Glen Canyon, a more user-friendly format, and a brand new logo. We are still working on getting the store put together in the coming weeks, with a new, easier way to support GCI online, but for now, go and check it out (http://glencanyon.org), and tell your friends!

We are also excited about some brand new bumper stickers! Be the first on your street to proudly display our new "Free the Colorado!" stickers on your bumper. Through our sticker for a stamp program, you can get one of our all new stickers for the mere price of a stamp. See the instructions and the new stickers @ http://www.glencanyon.org/aboutgci/contact.php .

As the weather turns colder and the days grow shorter, we are making plans for the last few trips of the year into Glen Canyon before the winter hits (http://www.glencanyon.org/gcift/index.php). We are excited to announce that a 10-person boat has been donated to the institute to allow us to take folks into the side-canyons of the Glen (such as Cathedral in the
Desert and the Escalante River canyons) to conduct service-oriented cleanup trips. We are working to raise money to fix the boat up for safe and environmentally friendly trips. The boat is currently equipped with an inefficient 2-stroke motor and we need to buy a good, used 4-stroke motor that will cost several thousand dollars. If you are interested in contributing to this cause and helping GCI get folks out to see the restoring side canyons, please call Chris to discuss the details (801.363.4450).

We are also proud to announce the Glen Canyon Youth Scholarship Fund which will cover GCI Field Trip tuition for deserving youth, allowing them to see the reemerging side canyons of the Glen. Started with a donation from Jerry Dixon, Glen Canyon Institute is soliciting financial contributions from donors who are interested in sponsoring selected promising youth with the opportunity to join one of the GCI Field Trips to experience first-hand the majestic beauty of Glen Canyon. Boys and girls ages 12-20 are eligible for nomination and should submit a short essay answering the question: “Why I want to experience the restoration of Glen Canyon” to jason@glencanyon.org. All donor inquiries about this scholarship fund should be directed to Chris @ 801.363.4450.

Katie Lee is out and about promoting her new book Sandstone Seduction and the restoration of Glen Canyon. She will be in Salt Lake City on November 11th at the University of Utah campus. Katie will sing, tell stories, and show photos of legendary Glen Canyon and will be followed with a short presentation on the latest developments in the movement to restore Glen Canyon. The show will begin at 7 pm and will be held in the Orson Spencer Hall Auditorium, room 175. For more information on other appearances by Katie Lee, see the schedule posted below.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend our smashingly successful Ed Abbey Speaks event last May, Audio and transcripts are now online @ http://www.nau.edu/library/speccoll/index.html (type in abbey speaks). The big time news coverage continues with recent links below. Keep your eyes peeled for a big science article on the restoration of the side canyons in the New York Times soon. We’ll send it out via email when it hits the newstand.

This is truly an exciting time for this historic movement. The dropping reservoir levels have provided us with a perfect window of opportunity to tell the world about Glen Canyon and show them why it should be saved. On behalf of the GCI Board of Trustees and the staff, I thank each of you for your support of this noble cause. As we work to position ourselves to take full advantage of the window of opportunity, I urge each of you to consider an additional contribution to the institute. Now is the time to offer extra financial support to Glen Canyon Institute and our vision of a healthy Colorado River through a restored Glen Canyon.

Free the Colorado!

Executive Director

2 views of Lake Powell: 'insurance policy,' outdated
Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake City, UT
By Joe Bauman

“... He blasted dams like Glen Canyon as "economically dysfunctional
projects." More of the water goes to grow alfalfa than any other crop,
he said.
"If we had an open market for water, I think the water could be worth
more than the alfalfa," McCool added. Farming uses 80 percent of Utah's
water, yet farming is only about 2 percent of the economy. If wasteful
agricultural water subsidies were eliminated there would be plenty of
water to go around, according to McCool. "We do not have a water
crisis in Utah," he said. "We have a water management crisis.”

"The headwaters are the most valuable (supplies) we have," said Neil
Grigg, a water historian, author and Colorado State University engineering
professor. "It doesn't make sense to de-water them too much.

"Economically, they're valuable because they're high up, and their
diversion points are close by. Ecologically, they're important because
they help sustain the whole ecosystem of the Colorado River.

As Reservoirs Recede, Fears of a Water Shortage Rise

One of the West's mightiest reservoirs is in steady retreat, the deep
turquoise of its waters replaced by the chalky white of canyon walls
