      Glen Canyon Institute Newsletter!
October 6, 2003
Volume 2 no. 8

Greetings Glen Canyon Institute Members!  A few weeks ago we held a wonderful event with Paul Winter in Cathedral in the Desert.  Paul Winter’s music was magical in the Cathedral and second only to the beauty of Clear Creek.  Read more about this event in the Salt Lake Tribune article (link below).

Glen Canyon Institute will hold its Seventh Annual Fall Conference on November 6, 2003. We will be having a dinner catered by a local gourmet Mexican restaurant at the Alumni House at the University of Utah. Our keynote speaker is Elizabeth Grossman, the author of Watershed: the Undamming of America. Author and singer Katie Lee will read a selection from her new book Sandstone Seduction. And we are excited to have Harlon Beament and Burnett Hendryx join us to present their slide show on the pre-Lake Powell Lower Escalante. We will be posting the evening’s program on our website soon. There are more details on the speakers below as well as the cost for the dinner and how to RSVP.

In conjunction with our conference, Katie Lee will be making a few radio appearances and will be reading from her new book at Ken Sanders Rare Books on November 5th. Please find more information posted below.

Finally, we have officially drawn the winners of our fall raffle!  We wish you all could have been there to share the excitement of the draw!  The winners are listed below and we will be sending the prizes out to the winners in the mail over the next two weeks.  Thank you to all who sent in donations and tickets!

For the River,
Megan Anderson

Paul Winter Concert in Cathedral in the Desert
The music of Paul Winter in Cathedral in the Desert soothed the soul and touched the heart of more than 60 people on September 20th.  The self-healing power of Mother Nature had revealed significantly more of Clear Creek canyon as a recent monsoon flood had cleaned out a huge amount of sediment and revealed eight more feet of the second waterfall.  The winter projections call for below average snowfall, making us optimistic that we will be standing on the floor of Cathedral in the Desert by next year at this time. We were joined by several representatives of the media, including Jed Boal from KSL news, Tom Wharton with the Salt Lake Tribune and several independent documentary film makers.  Hopefully those of you who live in the Salt Lake Valley were able to see the favorable news story done by Jed Boal on KSL.  Tom Wharton did an excellent job of representing the event in the print media.  Please find a link to his stories below.  Thanks again to all that were able to join us at the Cathedral.  It was definitely an afternoon to remember!

Annual Fall Conference
The Seventh Annual Fall Conference of the Glen Canyon Institute will be held on November 6th, 2003 at the Alumni House on the Univesity of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. The conference will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. Tickets to the event are $22.50 per person and include dinner. Please RSVP to Megan at 801.363.4450, or megan@glencanyon.org by November 1st.

Harlon Beament and Burnett Hendryx will present a slideshow featuring photos of pre-Lake Powell Escalante Canyons. Harlon flew aerial tours around the Colorado Plateau in the 40s and 50s. Burnett led guided horseback trips into the lower Escalante Canyons and is credited with having named Cathedral in the Desert. Their efforts led to two National Geographic articles in the 50s which contributed to the designation of Canyonlands National Park.

In addition to this exciting presentation, our newest board member, Dan Beard, Former Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation, will take a few minutes and discuss Western Water policy reform. Following Mr. Beard’s remarks, our good friend Katie Lee will read a selection from her new book Sandstone Seduction, which will be released this spring. The keynote speaker for the conference is Elizabeth Grossman, the author of Watershed: The Undamming of America. Elizabeth will discuss Glen Canyon Dam and its role in the River Restoration Movement.

There will be a silent auction with a variety of wonderful items donated by James Kay Photography, Hell’s Backbone Grill, Patagonia, and more. Ken Sander’s Rare Books is also providing a number of rare and unique Glen Canyon-related items for sale at the conference, including a 1st edition Exploration of the Colorado River and It’s Canyons, by John Wesley Powell.
