Glen Canyon Institute Newsletter!
July 18, 2003
Volume 2, No. 6
Greetings Glen Canyon
Institute Members! As you may have heard, we have recently moved our
headquarters from Flagstaff to Salt Lake City. Throughout the month of
July we have been busy getting things up and running here in Utah. This
move to Salt Lake City is especially important as the movement to restore
Glen Canyon enters a new phase. With the recent move, GCI welcomes Megan
Anderson on board as our newest staff member. More about Megan below.
This newsletter is short and
sweet, with the announcement of a new legal fund to help finance the
long-term legal battle. We are pleased to announce an incredible
opportunity for our members to experience a once-in-a-lifetime concert in
the reemerging Cathedral in the Desert. We also want to announce that we
have revamped our website and made it much more user-friendly. If you
haven’t seen our new brochures on Sedimentation, the Destruction of the
Grand Canyon, and the water lost from Lake Powell, check them out at the
new site, which is located at:
www.glencanyon.org. Spread the word!
For the River,
Chris Peterson
Director
Glen Canyon Legal Fund
The political and legal
battles have been heating up with dropping reservoir levels. With the move
to Salt Lake City, GCI has taken significant steps toward building a
comprehensive legal campaign that seeks to keep the reservoir level down
in the short term, and ultimately decommission Glen Canyon Dam. GCI has
hired Jeff Appel, a Salt Lake-based attorney who is one of the best
environmental defense lawyers in the country, to head up our legal
campaign.
In order to finance this new
and costly aspect of the movement to restore Glen Canyon, GCI has set up
the Glen Canyon Legal Fund. This legal campaign is critical to the
realization of a restored Glen Canyon, and we are working to raise money
to finance this long-term legal battle. As an incentive to our members and
friends to help finance the legal campaign, we will be offering a special
invitation(*see offer below) to the first fifty major donors to contribute
to the Glen Canyon Legal Fund.

Paul Winter performs in
Cathedral in the Desert
In celebration of the
reemergence of Cathedral in the Desert (now out of water after 30 years of
inundation), the world renowned musician, Paul Winter, will perform in
Cathedral in the Desert to a select group of GCI members. The first fifty
major donors (*a major donation is considered to be any amount over
$200.00) who contribute to the Glen Canyon Legal Fund will receive
a special invitation to spend an afternoon in Cathedral in the Desert with
Paul Winter. This unique performance will occur on September 20th
and will be followed by lunch and an opportunity to hike up Clear Creek
with Paul and other Colorado River lovers. Space is limited, so act now.
You don’t want to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to hear Paul
Winter perform in the reemerging Cathedral in the Desert.
GCI Unveils New Website!
If you haven’t seen the new
site yet, log onto www.glencanyon.org
and see the sleek new design, complete with pictures of what Glen Canyon
was before Powell Reservoir flooded this special place. There are links to
our redesigned store as well as links to view our new brochures on
sedimentation, the destruction of the Grand Canyon, and the water lost
from Powell Reservoir. Also on the site you will be able to find upcoming
GCI events and recent news stories. We will continue to work on the site,
adding new information as it comes up and making past documents of
interest available. Please feel free to give us feedback about our newly
designed site at, info@glencanyon.org.
Enjoy!!!
Share your Pictures!
At the web site, we now have
an area for you to share your photos from trips to the canyon and
surrounding areas. You can give us your pictures with captions,
descriptions, etc., and we'll put them it up on your own personal photo
page on the Glen Canyon Insitute web site. Details at
http://www.glencanyon.org/community/community_photos.htm.

A wetlands project for the
lower Colorado River has sparked some interest and may get the funding it
needs. Based in Yuma, this project could see success! "A three state
consortium is under intense pressure from the federal authorities to
provide some environmental balance to the entire lower Colorado River,
from below Glen Canyon to the Mexican Border".

CO exhaust, a silent killer
at Lake Powell. This article discusses the dangers of Carbon Monoxide
poisoning from vacationing on houseboats at the reservoir. One more
argument for restoring Glen Canyon where rafting and hiking were the
recreation of choice and houseboat exhaust was not an issue!
