Dear Friends of Glen
Canyon,
This year, the David Brower Award is being presented to Phil
and Keturah Pennington. These early Glen Canyon explorers have
spent a lifetime in helping to keep the memory of Glen Canyon
alive. Their images and stories about this area helped to ignite
the modern movement to restore Glen Canyon.
Soon after Glen Canyon was flooded, they produced a film for
the Sierra Club to help stop the two Grand Canyon dams. The film
was a journey through Grand Canyon and proved to be a mighty force
in preventing the Grand Canyon from being flooded. The film was
recently made into a DVD and will be available at the GCI online
bookstore in the next few months.
The Penningtons have a wonderful web page where you can take
a "photographic journey" down Glen Canyon. It is one
of the most beautiful of all sites devoted to Glen Canyon. Explore
the site at http://explorepdx.com/glen.html
Currently, the couple is still working to make a difference within
the community. Phil is working on his Knowledge Use Project that
tries to find ways to improve understanding of the science that
has made such a difference in human cultures and could make a
big difference in personal lives. Keturah is looking for ways
to grease the gears of community affairs, including participating
in the Neighborhood Emergency Team, the neighborhood crime watch,
and the Portland Block Captain Steering Committee.
The award will be given to them at a reception in their hometown
of Portland, Oregon on November 30. Details will be posted on
our website
Washington County Growth and Conservation Act Update
On November 16th, The National Senate Hearing Committee will
review the Washington County Growth and Conservation Act of 2006
(S. 3636). Right now the public’s voice is crucial in preventing
this Act from passing! Please contact the committee members and
urge them to oppose the Washington County Growth and Conservation
Act. Make sure to include your opposition to the construction
of the pipeline and uncontrolled growth of the Washington County
area as well as the auctioning off of publicly owned lands to
private developers. Emphasize your support for the protection
of national red rock wilderness lands.
